Training Starts Johnny Cage for Hopeful Mortal Kombat 2

WWE star The Miz says he wants to play Johnny Cage in the in-development Mortal Kombat 2 and reveals he has been training for a specific element. Based on Midway and NetherRealms' game franchise of the same name, Warner Bros. recently rebooted the film series with last year's Mortal Kombat, taking an R-rated approach to the material in comparison to Paul W.S. Anderson's PG-13 take. The most recent film centered on washed-up MMA fighter Cole Young as he learns of his lineage as the descendant of iconic ninja Scorpion and his duty to protect the Earth from the evil forces of Outworld by defeating them in the fighting tournament known as Mortal Kombat.

Lewis Tan led the cast of Mortal Kombat as Cole alongside Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Max Huang as Kung Lao, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion and Sisi Stringer as Mileena. Helmed by Simon McQuoid in his feature debut, the film hit theaters and HBO Max in April 2021 to mixed-to-positive reviews from critics and audiences alike for its bloody action and faithfulness to the games, while some criticism was directed towards its screenplay and performances. Though only a modest box office success with a gross of $83 million against its $55 million budget, Mortal Kombat was HBO Max's most-successful film launch to date upon release, eventually earning it a sequel order from WB, and one name is already looking to get in on the action. WWE star The Miz doubled down on his hopes of playing Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 2. The two-time WWE champion reflected on fans having cast him as the iconic character for the past year and teased he has been working on a key element of Cage in the hopes of landing the role.

Mortal Kombat fans found themselves disappointed with the 2021 reboot when Johnny Cage not only didn't appear in the film, but was also saved as a sequel tease in which a poster is shown for one of his in-universe films. As The Miz notes, many have been throwing their ideas out for who could portray Cage in Mortal Kombat 2 since the poster kept the character's face obscured, with the WWE star being one of the more frequently referenced thanks to his striking resemblance to the fighter. Other names fans have thrown out for Mortal Kombat 2's Johnny Cage have included Keanu Reeves, Joel McHale, who voiced Cage in the animated Mortal Kombat movies, and Jean-Claude Van Damme, on who the character was originally based upon in the games. While The Miz's lackluster filmography may turn off some to the idea of his playing Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 2, his devotion to the role may keep some open to the concept. Given Cage is well-known for his groin-punch splits in the games and interchangeable fighting stances, the WWE star's training to successfully accomplish both on his own could establish him as a strong contender for the sequel. In the meantime, audiences can revisit 2021's Mortal Kombat available to stream on HBO Max now.
