Star Explains Bizarre Jimmy vs Howard Boxing

Better Call Saul star Patrick Fabian explains the bizarre boxing match between Howard and Jimmy during season 6, episode 5. After various delays due to the pandemic and star Bob Odenkirk suffering a near-fatal heart attack on set, the beloved Breaking Bad prequel series finally returned to AMC last month for its final season 6. Throughout season 6's first five episodes, Jimmy McGill and his loyal consort Kim Wexler (Rhea Seehorn) have carefully put their master plan to sabotage Howard, managing partner of HHM, into action. By ruining Howard's career, Jimmy and Kim's primary objective in Better Call Saul season 6 is to force a settlement in the Sandpiper Crossing class-action lawsuit, which would lead to a massive payday for the two attorneys. After planting a bag of baby powder resembling cocaine in his gym locker, Slippin Jimmy's latest trick involved dressing up as Howard, stealing his car, and pretending to kick a sex worker in front of his legal partner, Clifford Main. However, during the latest episode, Howard catches wind and, tired of Jimmy's antics since season 1, challenges him to a boxing match to settle their differences once and for all. The two lawyers land a few punches against one another, though Howard ultimately emerges victorious after a punishing uppercut.

Fabian explained the bizarre boxing match from season 6, episode 5, titled "Black and Blue" for obvious reasons. After detailing the intense preparation and choreography for the scene, which Odenkirk was already well acclimated to due to his role in the action film Nobody, Fabian went on to explain the context of the boxing scene within the show and how it turns the tables for the two characters. Many viewers were struck by the bizarre Better Call Saul scene, which seemingly did not match the tone of the show. Lest audiences forget, however, that Better Call Saul is a more comical show compared to its Breaking Bad predecessor. Earlier seasons were stuffed with memorable silly moments, from a very suggestive talking toilet, to the Chicago Sunroof and infamous squat cobbler. Season 6's boxing match is a thinly-veiled metaphor for Howard beginning to fight back against Jimmy's Sandpiper scam. After the boxing bout, Howard hires a private investigator to tail Jimmy and report back his every move.

Gus Fring's head of security, Mike Ehrmantraut, is already tailing Jimmy and Kim in hopes of catching Lalo Salamanca if he attempts to reach out to his former legal representatives. Therefore, if they are any good at their jobs, the two sides are bound to collide at some point. While the Cartel business has largely remained separate throughout season 6, this is likely how Better Call Saul will connect the two storylines as the show races towards its mid-season 6 finale in a few weeks, with this boxing conflict surely just a taste of what's to come.
